cedej cairo

The Center for Economic, Legal, and Social Studies and Documentation (CEDEJ) is a multidisciplinary research institute working on contemporary Egypt from within the humanities and social sciences (anthropology, economics, geography, history, law, literature, musicology, politics, sociology, etc.). CEDEJ welcomes all researchers and graduate students working on Egypt. We published around 300 books and booklets since our creation in 1968. Our library has more than 36,000 volumes and 6,500 maps.

CEDEJ’s research programs are:

  • Cities, mobilities, and ecology (Pascal Menoret)
  • Governance and public policies (Mélanie Henry)
  • Digital humanities (Hala Bayoumi)

The Center was created in 1968 through an agreement between France and Egypt. It is the heir of the French School of Law in Cairo, whose library it partly preserved.

CEDEJ is a member of the UMIFRE system, a global network of French research institutes spanning five continents. The Center is funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). CEDEJ is attached to the Cultural Service of the French embassy in Egypt and has a branch in Khartoum, CEDEJ-K.
