Facing Authorities: Facebook-Metro Economy and the Response of Egyptian Women to the Economic Crises after 2011 Revolution
by Rehab SAKR
Abstract :
After 2011, Egypt had gone through a severe economic crisis, which touched many categories, especially women in the lower class and in the lower stratum of the middle class. Consequently, many of these women -who became the only responsible for their families- conquered the informal economic sector to be able to make ends meet.
This study argues that being involved in the informal economic sector was not only a solution to the economic crisis, which faced these women, rather, it paved the way for them to redefine and to reconstruct new roles for themselves as citizens (in a state), as wives or mothers (in a family) and as individuals (in a society).
