About CEDEJ
The Center for Economic, Legal, and Social Studies and Documentation (CEDEJ) was created in 1968 through an agreement between France and Egypt. The center is the heir of the French School of Law in Cairo (1890-1956), whose library it partly preserved. CEDEJ is a multidisciplinary research center working on contemporary Egypt from within the humanities and social science (political science, law, economics, geography, sociology, anthropology, contemporary history, etc.).
ESMA
ESMA is CEDEJ’s peer-reviewed social science journal. ESMA encourages empirically grounded social science research on contemporary Egypt, Sudan, and other Arab countries. Created in 1990 as Égypte/Monde Arabe, ESMA has recently become a trilingual publication (English, Arabic, and French). The journal’s new name, Égypte Soudan Mondes Arabes, emphasizes the connected histories that bind together the region’s societies through multiple networks and circulations. ESMA supports field research and publishes the work of junior and senior scholars. We invite papers from multiple fields (sociology, anthropology, political science, geography, urban studies, history, political economy, legal studies, development studies, etc.) that contribute to a better understanding of social change and bring in new theoretical vistas.
