The Center for Economic, Legal, and Social Studies and Documentation (CEDEJ) and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) will launch the book Middle Eastern Cities in a Time of Climate Crisis, published by CEDEJ in 2022 under the direction of Agnès Deboulet and Waleed Mansour.
The book launch will be attended by Marc Baréty, Ambassador of France to Egypt, Pascal Menoret, Director of CEDEJ, and Richard Probst, Resident Representative of FES in Egypt.
The sixteen chapters of this book do not offer any off-the-rack or technical solutions. Rather, they analyze the urban conundrum and the contribution of cities to the climate crisis. Some chapters focus on individual car ownership, land privatization, waste management, and land use changes under the guise of development. Others explore local and contextual answers to urban governance issues. With the support of CEDEJ and FES, researchers, experts, and civil society actors look at the ongoing transformations of Middle Eastern urban environments and mobilities and question them in relation to the climate crisis.
The contributions are based on empirical knowledge gathered in the Nile Delta, the Greater Cairo Region, Riyadh, and Beirut. Without concessions to mainstream thinking, this book contributes to a better understanding of urban challenges, climate threats and policy responses in contexts marked by growing environmental inequalities.
An electronic version is available on the Open Edition Books website:
The event will begin with a round table moderated by Fatemah Farag, veteran journalist and founder of Welad El Balad, with David Sims, urban planner and author of Egypt’s Desert Dreams, Dalila El Kerdany, professor of architecture and urban design, May El Ibrashy, chair of the Megawra Built Environment collective, and Ahmed Zaazaa, architect, urban planner, and founder of 10 Tooba. The roundtable will be in English and will be followed by a reception.
